Fun with graphs and epic fails!

Here are a couple excellent sites for the long weekend. Enjoy

GraphJam!: Who knew that graphing was such a rich source of humor? I am considering trading in my mathlete status for mathmedian.

Fail Blog: There is just something about an epic fail that speaks to me. This site is the definitive source.

Gold medals are like crabs

I’m pretty sure the US women’s softball team threw the gold medal game. I don’t know anything about softball or the team, but I do understand the dangers of overfishing. The US has taken the last three golds and has been so dominant that the IOC has cited the lack of a viable competitor as one reason they have decided to remove the sport from the London olympics entirely. No one likes events that have a guaranteed shutout by the US or ever having to envoke the “mercy rule” when their teams have been fully blasted.

So if you’re with American women’s softball, how do you get your sport brought back down the road? Don’t overfish. Just because you have the technology to catch ALL the crab, it doesn’t mean you should. Let some get away now and again and you’ll be able to catch more down the road.

Wow, this came out a little convoluted. You get the idea. I’m going to go drink some coffee.

What happened to the media?

I’m not mad at the media, it’s more that I’m just disappointed. It would be so easy to rant and assume some sort of crazy conspiracy is why I haven’t heard the word Afghanistan on the news in months. It might scream shenanigans when the only Chinese controversy covered is whether some gymnasts are too young (because that’s the only newsworthy issue in China obviously). I almost want to believe that mainstream media is really up to no good. At least that would be something. But more and more I begin to believe that they’re either just lazy or stupid. I think this little gem from CNN makes the case pretty well.

Dramatic readings

Huge thanks are due to the Microwave for introducing me to the dramatic reading phenomenon. I’m not sure if these are brilliant or terrible. I suppose that’s what makes them great.

This one is just awesome

A dramatic reading of a break up letter

A chain letter dramatically performed

MySpace has some good blogs

I was cruising the newly .net converted blogs today, and found a couple that really stood out in terms of excellence.

Meet Psyco. He’s pissed off because his account was deleted for some reason. I have no idea on the real back story here. He tells his version in not only in a fantastic blog complete with illustrations, but has a pretty phenomenal song directed at Tom. Check him out.

If I haven’t already made you read Lamb by Christopher Moore, put your hand up now so I can come around and beat you into submission. He’s far and away my favorite living author. Anyway, it turns out that he not only has a MySpace but he’s actively blogging on it. Hurray. Go and send him a friend request.
