Odds and Ends on a Wednesday

Thought I’d drop a few random thoughts on you as we anxiously await tonight’s code push.

Signs are neat- I’ve been noticing signs a lot more lately. Have you noticed that all men’s rooms have triangle signs and women’s are always circles? There’s a whole nomenclature around sign colors and shapes. Here’s a handy guide to traffic sign shapes. I’m having trouble finding a equivalent guide to non-traffic signs. Let me know if you can find one.

Here’s a sign that I think is telling me not to poop in my suitcase

San Francisco Airport Has Cool Art- SFO has the coolest art in the American terminal. The exhibits there are always interesting. Here’s a bunch of 50′s sci-fi stuff they are currently showing.

My Twinn is unbelievably freaky- I’m not sure how they found me, but I got a copy of this catalog from My Twinn.

WTF?!? That has got to be the freakiest doll ever. They design each one to look like your kid (Heya, Sally! Daddy made you into a doll. Consider yourself replaced). I’m don’t know what it is about these, but they give me the heebie geebies.

Donkey Overload- I can’t remember if I’ve had you all watch this one, so let’s just be on the safe side.

Total Immersion- This totally blows my mind. Can you believe this is processing live?

Ben is pretty funny lately- It’s fun to see his personality really come together.

Ben has a tent. He’s been actively stockpiling against the coming rise of the machines.

Ben provides a seminar on the finer points of dental hygiene

I’m not sure if this is a hat, a helmet, or if he’s R2D2.

That’s it for tonight.

Christmas is around the corner

Dear Santa,

I have been a good boy all year long (shut up, Phil). Please leave some burnable murcury thiocyanide in my stocking for Christmas. There will be cookies and milk.

Your friend
Steve

Ads, white people dancing, and 8-bit music

I’m enjoying a cocktail and wrapping up the day. We don’t having anything good recorded. As a result, you all get a shiny new blog to enjoy. ENJOY IT!

MySpace Self-Serve Ads- I’m doing some testing on the platform and it’s pretty slick (Ok, Tberg. We all hear you patting yourself on the back). The idea is that anybody can build and buy banner ads on MySpace through an automated interface. Anyway, these are the fancy ads I built for my blog. The first round got rejected. I’ll let you know how they perform.

The Way International- This may be my favorite new cult in a while. I really like the bit where the dude is possessed by the Spirit (it’s actually the spirit of Michael Jackson from Smooth Criminal, but you get the idea). Don’t miss this one

8-bit Music- How is it that I’m always the last to know about this stuff? It turns how there’s a whole subculture dedicated to 8-bit music (think the crappy music from old video games). They seem to have a pretty strong presence on MySpace. Here’s some good representative stuff. Expect to have this stuck in your head for days.

This one is pretty sophisticated, but the guy’s explanation just cracks me up.

Phun with Photos

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how people can use their photos for something more interesting than printing out and sticking in a box. Here are some fun things I knocked together using a few of the various photo solutions on the web. The first two are cards with Ben on them and the last one is a notepad where I’m being detained by Storm Troopers. Excuse the bad quality. These sites don’t make it easy to pull the images.

What else have you wanted to create with your pics?

I’m up early so it’s time for science

The earlier Ben decides to get up, the more imperative it is that we have a little science to brighten our day. Here you go!

Magnetism is cool- but maglev trains are freakin’ awesome!!!!
MAGLEV Model Train

Maybe touch screens will not suck now- I saw a demo of Swype last week and I have to admit I was flabbergasted. That is far and away the slickest bit of tech I’ve seen in a long stretch (that I’m not restricted from sharing by NDA’s anyway). Check it out here.

(Science+Tshirt)/pi=Fashion!- So cool

Viscosity is pretty slick- Ha ha!
